Native American Polished Stone Axe Like Tool found at the mouth of Conoy Creek in the 1920’s

This interesting polished tool was found by Gordon Geistweit of Bainbridge in the 1920’s while digging postholes on the Haldeman Mansion property. I purchased this artifact from his daughter 25 years ago. The Haldeman Mansion is located in Locust Grove, Pa which adjoins the town of Bainbridge. The tool was found along the mouth of Conoy Creek on the property. There were multiple Indian villages within 1000 feet of this location including a circa 1500 Shenk’s Ferry village, a 1620’s Susquehannock village, and a Conoy Indian village in the early 1700’s. Since this artifact was discovered in this spot, and dug out canoes were widely used, I’m convinced it was used for making them. If you know a little about dug outs, they would build small controlled fires on the log, then chip out the carbon until it was hollowed out. It seems this tool would be perfect for that use if a handle was added. It has a sharpened blade on both ends, with one being pointed. The entire surface is smooth and polished. A truly unique artifact that even has the provenance as to where it was discovered.
